Walking Your Dog in Snowy Weather: What to Watch Out For When It's Cold & Frosty

Cold weather can be great fun for dogs, but frosty and snowy conditions also come with a few risks that owners don’t always think about. A little extra care can make winter walks safer and more comfortable for your dog, so if you're worried about walking your dog in snowy weather, this one's for you.
Watch Those Paws
Ice, frost and grit can be tough on paws. Cold ground can cause cracking, soreness and irritation, especially if salt or grit is used on pavements.
Top tips:
Rinse and dry paws after walks
Check between toes for ice build-up
Keep paw hair trimmed to reduce snow clumping
Consider paw balm for extra protection
Dog shoes are also a good consideration in this weather if your dog will tolerate them
Shorter Walks Can Be Better
Not all dogs are built for cold weather. Smaller breeds, short-coated dogs and older dogs can feel the cold quickly. If your dog starts lifting paws, shivering or slowing down, it’s time to head home. Several shorter walks are often better than one long one in freezing conditions.
Beware of Slippery Surfaces
Icy pavements can be just as dangerous for dogs as they are for people. Slips can lead to sprains or muscle injuries. Stick to gritted paths where possible and avoid steep slopes or untreated areas after frost or snowfall. But, another reminder as it's so important, check your dog's paws for grit once you're home.
Coat, Skin & Winter Care

Cold air and central heating can dry out your dog’s skin and coat. Regular grooming helps remove dead hair, improve circulation and keep the coat healthy through winter. At Brentwood Bubbles ’N’ Barks, we often spot dry skin, matting or paw issues early during winter grooms - another reason regular grooming matters year-round.
Extra Winter Safety Tips
Make sure your dog is visible in darker mornings and evenings
Keep leads secure, especially in slippery conditions
Avoid frozen ponds or lakes - ice is rarely safe
